A third-grader at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School was surprised on Wednesday with a huge national award for taking quick actions to help save a choking student.
David Diaz Jr. Late in the 2021-2022 school year, David Diaz Jr. noticed that a fellow student began choking on pizza during lunch. He immediately began performing the Heimlich maneuver, which he saw an actor use in a television show. Because of David's courage, his friend survived.
David had been previously recognized by Kids Wish Network as their Hero of the Month. Kids Wish Network is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children experiencing life-altering situations.
On Wednesday, David was surprised by Kids Wish Network, Binghamton City School District Superintendent Dr. Tonia Thompson, and Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar by being award Kids Wish Network's Hero of the Year award. As part of the award, David was given a check for $5,000. Heroes are recognized for their positivity and ability to overcome adversity.
